First flight of the all-new Falcon 6X widebody business jet is on schedule for early 2021. This steady progress by the program team is noteworthy considering the Spring’s Covid-19 slowdown and the ongoing requirement for increased health precautions. Assembly is proceeding smoothly in large part because of Dassault’s expertise in digital design and manufacturing.

AND COMFORT

The 6X draws on Dassault’s latest fighter technology. Its digital flight controls are the most advanced in business aviation, operating all control surfaces (including a new fighter-derived flaperon) for a better ride and greater efficiency. The new self-diagnostic FalconScan system monitors 100,000 parameters, reducing troubleshooting and downtime. But passengers will be impressed by the cabin space. The 6X cabin is taller and wider than any other business jet for the ultimate in comfort.

A FIRST LOOK AT FALCON 6X NUMBER 1

The first 6X airframe is fully assembled in our production facility in Merignac, France, with PW812D engines installed. And it’s a sight to see. Power-on checks have begun for electrical, hydraulic, fuel and other systems—key steps preceding first flight.

Wing and fuselage have been mated on the second flight test aircraft, and a third test aircraft is in the early stages of assembly. Intensive flying begins in early 2021 to achieve an on-schedule entry into service in 2022.

IT’S COMING TOGETHER BEAUTIFULLY

The 6X’s all-new wing has been joined to the aircraft’s fuselage with 120 titanium bolts using Dassault’s trademark fighter-like structural integration. 

Landing gear is attached. Avionics are installed, 

including the 6X’s advanced Honeywell RDR - 4000 automatic 3D Weather radar with Doppler turbulence detection. Also in the nosecone: multi-spectral cameras for the FalconEye Combined Vision System.

A FLIGHT DECK LIKE NO OTHER

The 6X cockpit gives technicians (and pilots) plenty of room to work. Everything is bigger than in previous Falcons, including 30 percent more window area. Aircraft #1’s EASy Avionics are installed. It will contain extensive flight test monitoring equipment

visible on port and starboard sides of the fuselage. Elsewhere, in a simulator/test rig, pilots and engineers run through flight deck systems checks and rehearse procedures. Cabin systems are checked on another ground test rig.

The new PW812D engine has completed a series of flights aboard Pratt & Whitney’s 747 flying testbed with a second series that started this summer. The engine has accumulated more than 200 hours in the air and more than 1,600 on the ground. The most stringent engine tests—for bird strike, ice ingestion and fan blade out scenarios—have been successfully completed. The high-bypass 812D meets the latest Chapter 14 noise requirements with margin to spare, as well as upcoming standards for CO2 and other emissions.

Dassault Customer Service is laying the groundwork for smooth service entry in 2022. Long lead time items, including landing gear and large structures, are on order. A full inventory of parts will be on hand in Paris and at Teterboro three months prior to entry into service. Falcon operators are supported by 60 service facilities worldwide, including recent additions TAG Maintenance Services and ExecuJet MRO Services. The Falcon 6X begins life with extended service intervals of 800 hours or 12 months between inspections.

A FALCON THROUGH AND THROUGH

The Falcon 6X is a big jet that flies the world with 5,500 nm (10,186 km) range yet slips into and out of small airports with ease. Its widebody cabin (the widest and tallest) sets a new standard for quiet, comfort and connectivity within business aviation.

A full cabin mockup has been impressing visitors around the world. For a limited time, starting July 29 through August 13, you can see it yourself in Nice, France, at the Business Aviation Terminal.
